What You Are Seeing
The door won't budge, or it slams down the last foot of travel with a bang. Sometimes there's a loud pop from the garage first - that's the spring letting go, usually while the door is closed and under full tension. You might see the torsion spring above the door split into two pieces with a visible gap, or notice the door feels twice as heavy when you lift the emergency release and try it by hand.
On a double door, a single broken spring can still let the door limp open on an opener that's fighting way harder than it should, which is its own problem - openers aren't built to compensate for a dead spring, and running one that way for weeks wears out the drive gear.
This is a mechanical fatigue failure, not a defect. Torsion springs are rated for a set number of open-close cycles, and once a spring hits the end of that count, it breaks - often without warning, often on a cold morning when the steel is stiffest and least forgiving.
Why This Fails Locally
Most houses across this service area were built between 1963 and 2003, with the bulk of the stock going up in the 1960s and 70s. Springs from that era, and even a lot of the replacements installed in the decades since, weren't always sized to the door weight or the cycle count a modern household puts on a garage - more cars, more openers used as a main entrance, more daily cycles than the original builder planned for.
Cold makes it worse. This area sits in a severe cold climate band, and steel contracts and stiffens in low temperatures. A spring already near the end of its fatigue life is far more likely to snap on a hard freeze morning than in July, because the metal has less give left in it right when the door demands the most force to lift.
Houses from the 1976 median build year onward often still carry their second or third spring, not their first, and nobody in the house has any record of when it went in or what cycle-count it was rated for.
The Cost of This Job
We don't have a published price list to quote here, and it wouldn't be honest to make one up - spring cost depends on door weight, whether it's a single or double door, whether both springs need replacing (we generally recommend replacing them in pairs since they wear at the same rate), and what size and cycle-rating the door actually needs given how it's used.
One honest limitation: if your opener has also been straining against a broken spring for a while, the gears inside can wear down, and that's a separate repair we'll flag rather than bundle in as if it were part of the spring job. We'd rather tell you upfront than have you surprised later.
